ISO-8859-1 was het standaardteken in HTML 4.01.

ISO-8859-1 tekenset
Het eerste deel van ISO-8859-1 (entiteitsnummers van 0-127) is de originele ASCII-tekenset. Het bevat cijfers, Engelse hoofdletters en kleine letters en enkele speciale tekens.

ISO-8859-1 lijkt erg op Windows-1252.
In ISO-8859-1 zijn de tekens van 128 tot 159 niet gedefinieerd.
In Windows-1252 worden de tekens van 128 tot 159 gebruikt voor enkele nuttige symbolen.

Aangezien veel websites ISO-8859-1 declareren en de waarden van 128 tot 159 gebruiken alsof ze Windows-1252 gebruiken, zullen de meeste browsers deze tekens uit de Windows-1252-tekenset weergeven in plaats van niets.
